1-Month Neurodivergent-Affirmative Therapy Practitioner Course

Module 1: Shifting the Lens: What Neurodivergence-Affirmative Therapy Actually Is
Introduction to the neurodiversity paradigm and how neurodivergent-affirmative therapy differs from traditional deficit-based approaches. Students will learn how to understand neurodivergence without treating differences as something that automatically needs to be fixed or normalized.

Module 2: How Different Brains Work: ADHD, Autism, AuDHD and Specific Learning Difficulties
Understanding the core characteristics and lived experiences associated with ADHD, Autism, AuDHD and Specific Learning Difficulties. The module focuses on how these differences can affect attention, communication, sensory processing, learning, emotional regulation and everyday functioning.

Module 3: Across the Lifespan and Across Genders: Children, Adolescents, Adults
Exploring how neurodivergence may present differently across childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Students will also learn about gender differences, under-identification, late identification and how social expectations can influence the presentation of neurodivergence.

Module 4: Masking, Invalidation, Ableism and Burnout
Understanding masking and the reasons neurodivergent individuals may hide or suppress their natural ways of communicating and functioning. The module also covers invalidation, ableism, chronic stress and neurodivergent burnout, along with their impact on mental health and relationships.

Module 5: Trauma and Differential Formulation: Traits, Adaptations, Mismatch and Mental Health Conditions
Learning how to differentiate neurodivergent traits from trauma responses, psychological adaptations and mental health conditions. Students will learn how to develop a more complete formulation by considering the interaction between the individual, their environment, experiences and support needs.

Module 6: Noticing, Identifying and Referring: What Therapists Can and Should Do
Understanding what therapists can observe during therapy and when further assessment or specialist referral may be appropriate. The module focuses on ethical boundaries, appropriate referral, collaborative care and avoiding over-identification or inappropriate diagnosis.

Module 7: Adapting Therapy and Building Clients’ Own Systems
Learning how to adapt therapeutic communication, activities, environment and interventions according to individual neurodivergent needs. Students will explore practical strategies for executive functioning, emotional regulation, sensory needs, routines, communication and developing personalised support systems.

Module 8: Families, Systems, Culture and Integration
Understanding the role of family, education, workplace, relationships and wider social systems in the lives of neurodivergent individuals. Students will learn how culture and social expectations can influence experiences of neurodivergence and how therapists can work with systems rather than focusing only on the individual.

Module 9: Integration and Application of Neurodivergence-Affirmative Therapy
Bringing together the concepts covered throughout the course and applying them to therapeutic situations. Students will learn how to integrate neurodivergence-affirmative principles into assessment, case formulation, therapeutic planning, communication and ongoing support.

Module 10: Practical Roleplays and Case-Based Application
A practical session where students apply their learning through therapist-client roleplays and case-based exercises. The focus will be on identifying needs, adapting communication, responding to neurodivergent experiences, formulation and selecting appropriate therapeutic strategies.
